The name refers to the Beeliar people, a tribe of indigenous Australians who had land usage rights over the southern half of Perth's metropolitan area. The suburb contains the Thomsons Lake Nature Reserve.

The Beeliar wetlands lie on the Swan Coastal Plain south west of the City of Perth in Western Australia. There are more than twenty discrete lakes and hundreds of small swamps in this wetland complex. They follow the swales of the coastal dune system along the south west coast of Australia between the escarpment and the Indian Ocean.
This is also an important migratory bird route and these wetlands are an important stopover point. They are also immensely valuable as a habitat for the vast diversity of plants and animals which are found in the south western corner of Australia.
In the past these wetlands were also the home of the Beeliar group of the Nyoongar indigenous people and they still hold great cultural and spiritual significance for them.
Today the Beeliar wetlands are surrounded by urban development, but incredibly many have survived as a haven for wildlife. For urban dwellers the wetlands now provide opportunities for relaxation and spiritual enrichment in the midst of suburbia.
Situated 21km of the Perth GPO.
'Beeliar' is the Aboriginal name for the southern metropolitan region. R
M Lyon recorded the name in 1833, referring to it as 'the district of
Midjegoorong' (an Aboriginal leader). The name was approved for the
suburb in 1993
